In this course, students will learn about reporting and writing feature articles. Students will develop their interviewing, reporting, and synthesis skills as they learn about topics from four continents. Students will also learn about how to conceptualize their feature articles and construct a reporting plan. In this class, students will have the opportunity to interview real people, such as professors and instructors, and they will develop a story from a variety of sources.
Students can select the publications to submit their work to. At least one must be an NKU publication. The others can be submitted to non-NKU publications. Students must rewrite two feature stories from the first three, accounting greatofmining for eight percent of their final grade. Rewrites must reflect judgment and creative effort, as well as be based on the topic of the article. In addition to using the appropriate source materials, students must adhere to the usual alinaimagine practices of the publication.
When writing a feature, remember that the writer’s job is to capture the attention of the reader. A headline is the first thing readers see, so it’s crucial to make it as intriguing as possible. The headline should be compelling enough to set the tone and ask the question that readers want answered. If you can’t do that, you’re probably not ready for feature writing.
